The Ferry Birds

For six years two Turnstones caught the 8.15 ferry from Falmouth to St Mawes crossing the Fal Estuary, a journey of three miles, they returned on the 5.15.
They were nick-named Freddy and Freda by the skipper and became famous worldwide for this extraordinary behaviour, featuring in the Daily Mail and Telegraph.

Ron Johns MD of Mabecron Books, who also operates Bookshops in Falmouth, Plymouth and St Ives and is also the publisher of The Soggy Bear stories, mentioned this fact to Orange prize winner Helen Dunmore. Helen, after a very short time, came up with an intriguing children's story which unravels the mystery of why the Turnstones travel on the ferry every day.
The book has another feature, being illustrated by Falmouth College of Art Graduate Rebecca Cobb; who on the strength of her amazing illustrations has been offered a two book deal with Global publishers Macmillan.
The Ferry Birds will be published at the end of March 2010 we are certain that the media will focus on the King Harry Ferry, Falmouth, St Mawes and Cornwall. A Mousehole Cat effect!
The press launch will be at 11.15 am on the 3rd April 2010, with a short voyage followed by a buffet lunch.
