CORNWALL REVEALS HIDDEN ‘TITANIC' MEMORIES

NATIONAL Maritime Museum Cornwall's recent announcement of a new Titanic exhibition and a request for locals to get in touch with their memories has revealed some incredible stories.

Relatives of ancestors who were onboard the Titanic, family members connected to the rescue vessel the Carpathia, and descendants of engineers and crew members all associated with the ill fated vessel have been sharing their memories, letters, photographs and objects from the Titanic with the Museum's Curator, Jenny Wittamore.

Jenny says: "We knew that Cornwall shared a lot of history with the Titanic but we didn't realise quite how much. The letters and calls we've been receiving are fascinating and the information received is revealing a whole new Cornish side to the disaster.

Many people who have been in touch with us have said that they will be contacting their family and extended families over Christmas to find out more. It seems as if our call for information on Cornwall's association with the Titanic has created a re-awakening of interest for genealogy.

Jenny concludes: "We have been enormously privileged to be allowed into people's lives, to see their family history and to re-live their memories. As more and more news reaches us, a little more history is revealed each time and we feel that there is still more to come. Our contacts have told us that a Cornish Titanic Society exists and it would be wonderful to hear from them. They could be the key to a lot of questions asked by the people who have been in touch with us."

Titanic's history is so rich and with 96 years past since the tragedy, the breadth of stories are far and wide. If you do know of someone, or yourself have history associated with this epic moment in maritime history, please contact the Maritime Museum's Curator, Jenny Wittamore, on 01326 214538 or on jennywittamore@nmmc.co.uk. The Maritime Museum is looking to tell Cornwall's story of the Titanic and your help might reveal some lost history.

The Museum's Titanic, Honour and Glory exhibition opens on 6 March and runs until 21 June 2009.
