From 24 March

The preparations for the annual Fal River Festival in Cornwall, are well under way with the line-up of the 10-day event in May beginning to take shape.

The Festival celebrates over 150 events which take place around the Fal River, utilising this unique stretch of water and bringing the community together with a footfall of over 100,000 people in recent years.

This year the Festival will launch on Friday the 23rd May, with the extremely popular annual Beer Fleet parade - a flotilla of boats packed full of shanty singers, pasties and plenty of beer, sailing from Truro to Falmouth.

The Festival’s title sponsor has already been announced as Falmouth University, a perfect fit with the cultural and creative events which are embraced by the Festival.

A recent Falmouth University graduate is even behind the establishment of one of the new events to be included this year – Matt Loots has organised a Kayakathon which will be taking place on Sunday June 1st.

Any experienced sea kayakers will have the opportunity to take part in the coastal endurance challenge - paddling over 20 miles along the stunning Cornish coastline, starting at Swanpool Beach and passing sites such as Mylor Yacht Club and Pendennis Point on their way.

Matt Loots organiser of the kayakathon, said:

“The Kayakathon is set to be a truly exciting new event and should be a great spectacle even for those who can't take part. It is a perfect new activity for the Festival as it encompasses a wide expanse of the Fal River.”

The annual National Maritime Museum Cornwall Abseil will take place on Sunday the 1st of June to support BF Adventures' work with disadvantaged and disabled children and adults; participants will once again be raising funds by abseiling 95 feet down the Museum’s lookout tower.

Anyone looking to take part in something a little less energetic, but just as exciting will be pleased to hear that Jazz on the Quay will return to St Mawes on Wednesday 28th of May and Film on the Fal will return on Thursday the 29th and Friday 30th of May, with the films to be confirmed closer to the event.

Sam White, Marketing and Festivals Officer for the Fal River Festival, said:

“Across the ten days there really is an event for everyone. The Festival is now in its 9th year and with the line-up incorporating established events and new surprises, we hope to see over 100,000 visitors to the Festival once again.”

Sam continued: “We still have an assortment of events to be announced in the forthcoming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled.”
