exploring the adventures of Hunter William Lobb

On Monday 28th September, The Lost Gardens of Heligan opens its commemorative exhibit exploring the adventures of the great Cornish Plant Hunter William Lobb and celebrating the bi-centenary of his birth in 1809.

During the celebration week from Monday 28th September until Sunday 4th October an insightful and thought provoking exhibit following the life and adventures of William Lobb will be on display in the Covered Area.

Garden visitors will be invited to ‘Go Plant Hunting' in the Heligan Jungle, where a number of William Lobb plant introductions can be discovered and enjoyed in this sub-tropical setting. Garden visitors will be given a map of the Jungle on arrival, detailing William Lobb plantings and enabling the exploration of the botanical treasures collected by this great Cornish Plant Hunter in their unique Cornish garden landscape.

To honour the achievements of William Lobb, the first commercial Plant Hunter, the Heligan Nursery will be presenting a special offer in Plant Sales. Heligan Plant Sales is open all year round, supplying a wide range of high quality plants, which reflect the diversity of plantings found in the Lost Gardens. An unique ‘William Lobb Plant Collection' will be offered during the celebration week featuring plants William introduced to England through the famous Veitch Nursery of Exeter, including the distinctive Monkey Puzzle Tree, the beautiful Chilean Lantern Tree and the impressive Giant Redwood. The special offer allows everyone purchasing two plants from the ‘William Lobb Plant Collection' a free Berberis darwinii, Myrtus luma or Trachycarpus fortuneii. For full details of the special offer please visit Heligan Plant Sales during the celebration week.

Also on display for the William Lobb celebration will be a rare 103-year-old edition of the original ‘Hortus Veitchii'. Written by James Veitch, this book details the history of the Plant Hunters and hybridists who were employed by the Veitch Nurseries between 1840 - 1906. The original ‘Hortus Veitchii' was a limited edition publication that was given as a gift to botanists, libraries and prestigious customers of the Veitch Nurseries. An original copy of this book will be on display in the Heligan Shop. In 2006, to mark the book's centenary, a limited edition run of 1000 was republished by Caradoc Doy, a leading Veitch specialist. We are fortunate enough to have a small stock of these unique books for sale at £95.

Horticulturalist and Veitch specialist Caradoc Doy will be giving an exclusive walk and talk about Plant Hunter William Lobb at 2pm on Tuesday 29th September. This insightful talk about a great Cornish Plant Hunter is included in the garden admission charge and is FREE to garden visitors. The walk and talk will last approximately 1 ½ hours and will begin at Top Pond in the Heligan Jungle, where many Lobb introductions can be enjoyed. Tickets will be limited, given on a first-come, first-served basis and can be collected from the Ticket Office on the day.

Free admission to the William Lobb celebration display, Heligan Plant Sales and Heligan Shop.
