Bank Holiday sunshine draws crowds to Fal River Festival opening weekend

This year’s Fal River Festival ended in style and sunshine as crowds flocked to St Mawes for the final events and the closing ceremony.

And with an estimated 30,000 people getting involved over the nine-days, organisers are claiming a record year for the festival which was first held in 2006.

Launched to celebrate life on and around the river Fal, this year’s spectacular was the biggest to date with over 130 events taking place.

Highlights included the Greenbank Hotel setting an unofficial record for the world’s largest moule a la Normandie, the King Harry Ferry being turned into a floating cinema, Skinners Free Live Music gigs, literary dinner, castle to castle swim and the England v Brazil football match held at Penryn Athletic.

“This has to be the best Fal River Festival to date,” said festival director, Toby Budd.

“We were blessed with some amazing weather that went alongside some memorable events.

“And people reacted to it with record numbers taking part in what was happening.

“From the art and literature events and workshops, through to the music events, there was something for the whole family to enjoy.

“I think we’ve set a benchmark this year and it will give us something to work towards as we continue to build the Fal River Festival into one of Cornwall’s major events over the next five years.”

Toby’s sentiments were echoed by festival chairman, Tim Light, who said: “This was an absolutely brilliant festival right from the opening launch with the beer fleet sailing from Truro to Falmouth, to the closing ceremony on St Mawes harbour.
“It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves.

“And I’d like to say a big thank you everyone who put on events, as well as our generous sponsors, without whom much of this would have been unable to happen.”
