Famous Cornish Houses – their families and the mineral connection

4 May 2017

Roseland Festival 2017, Roseland Inn, 3pm

Ivor Bowditch explains the importance of mineral discoveries to famous Cornish families, their houses and estates.

Cornwall has long been renowned for its extensive mineral wealth. Many of Cornwall’s great families who developed large estates owe much to their involvement with the County’s long mining history.

This talk will identify some of the major families, their houses and estates in mid Cornwall with connections to Cornwall’s metal mining and china clay industries.

Houses which will be included are Tregothnan, Caerhays and Lanhydrock. History dating back to the 1700’s will include developments such as local ports and railways.
