The Cornwall Air Ambulance was the first of its kind and it took to the skys in April 1987. Since then it has flown just over 22,000 missions. Each flying hour costs in the region of £600 at todays prices and this year the total costs are expected to reach a new high of almost £1.6 million.
Our distinctive red and yellow helicopter remains one of the busiest in the UK, and is tasked several times every day, giving Cornwall a hardworking value for money service. From its base at Newquay Cornwall Airport, Cornwall's Air Ambulance helicopter can reach any part of the county within 20 minutes, and the Isles of Scilly in 28 minutes. To seriously ill and injured patients and their families, the time that can be saved in conveying them by air ambulance to hospital can be precious and literally be the difference between life and death.
