Cornwall's favourite sailor wins gold at Falmouth Finn Festival in an Olympic-sized weekend.

Ben Ainslie had a weekend to remember after winng the Finn Gold Cup World Championships in Falmouth and starting the Olympic Torch Relay.

Cornwall's favourite sailor and hot favourite to grab his fourth Olympic gold medal at London 2012 won the Finn Gold Cup for a record sixth time and was the first torchbearer, on the 70 day tour of the British Isles.

Speaking from Falmouth, Ben said: 'Winning this year is the most special [of all six titles] for me personally because it’s where I grew up and learnt to sail and I have so much history here.

'And with the Olympics just around the corner it’s a great time to go out and win a world championship.'

Sailors faced challenging and exhilarating sailing conditions in Falmouth and were extremely complimentary about the race organisation and the welcome they received in Falmouth.

Future blueprint

Robin Taylor, Race Director, added: 'The Finn Festival has been three years in the planning and execution and without a massive amount of support from all our sponsors and partners it would not have happened.

'We also are deeply indebted to our magnificent team of volunteers who have given up their time to make this event happen. Over 150 individuals from the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (RCYC), POFSA, Falmouth Marine College and many other organisations have formed an amazing team.'

'We have members of the race team who have come from all over the world to ensure that the competition is of the highest standard and we thank them for their involvement. On behalf of the organising committee and competitors I would like to pass on our sincere thanks for the help from everyone involved in the event.'

Malcolm Bell, Head of VisitCornwall, the tourism service of Cornwall Development Company, concluded: 'To secure the Finn Gold Cup in an Olympic year was quite an achievement for Falmouth, the event has clearly demonstrated the capacity of the port for running international sailing events.

'The event organisers The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, together with the International and British Finn Association and local partners, with the support from sponsors, have laid down a blueprint for future international watersports events to be attracted to the County.'
