Festival establishes itself as family favourite

From 3 June 2013

2013 Truro & Penwith Fal River Festival is being described as one of the best ever thanks to great weather and even better events.

Organisers of the Truro and Penwith College Fal River Festival are hailing this year as the best ever after around 100,000 people enjoyed the activities on offer.

Launched in 2006 the festival celebrates life on and around the river Fal and featured over 150 events over 10 days.

Highlights included the Fal Fish Festival, the RNLI’s Castle to Castle Swim, 3 Choirs in a Garden, the Beer Fleet, day sailing on the tall ship the Bessie Ellen, the annual abseil down the National Maritime Museum tower for BF Adventure and the Around the Roseland Adventure Race.

There was also an increase in the number of arts and cultural events taking place this year with the festival team working closely with Falmouth University.

Fal River Festival’s, Tommy Tonkins, said: “The festival has become established as must-do in the half-term week for locals, as well as families visiting Cornwall from around the UK.

“As well as offering a wide range of activities, the festival provides a fantastic showcase for this area of outstanding natural beauty.

“It also provides a huge boost to the local economy across all sectors, including tourism, before the season gets under way fully.”

Plans underway

Events including The Story Republic and Falmouth University's Creative Blitz ran for the first time this year and drew in families and children to enjoy new events.

Tommy added: “With local initiatives like the money-saving travel pass, the Fal Mussel Card, more people than ever before have been out and about enjoying the river which is what the Festival is all about.”

Plans are now underway for the 2014 festival.
