Skippers' Blog | Channel 12

From 12 July 2013

All the latest happenings from our Skipper Simon Hammond on the Place Ferry.

It is always good to see St Mawes bay full of sailing craft.

They are anchored in the shelter of the Bay in the bright sunlight. This makes it busy for the Place ferry as there is a greater demand for water taxi work, and a quick call on Channel 12 will usually bring a swift response.

A group of 5 people came out on Livingstone in order to look for an Ajax sailing boat called Aolius, which had originally been purchased in 1968 by a member of the group. We found the Ajax moored close to the Place side of the Percuil river, and here is the gentleman pictured close to the boat that he had owned. He used to sail her out of the Thames and made 3 separate trips across the North Sea in her, shining a torchlight onto the sail in order to ensure that other ships could spot her at night. A pretty incredible activity bearing in mind that an Ajax has no cabin or real shelter, and no engine! He subsequently sailed large sailing boats for wealthy people until retirement.
A delightful moment in the daily routine.
