A superb, engrossing drama with powerful performances, directed and adapted by John Patrick Shanley from his own award-winning play. Last seen dashing about a Greek island, Meryl Streep reverts to her usual level of intensity in Doubt. She plays a nun who suspects a priest (Hoffman) of abusing one of her pupils at the Catholic school she runs in 1960s New York. Streep is typically commanding: a fearsome, wily disciplinarian who proves utterly tenacious in following up her suspicions of Hoffman's warmer and more liberal-leaning cleric. This is an austere and intense film with a spellbinding battle of wits at its centre.

"A masterpiece without a doubt. An incredible film" Baz Bamigboye, The Daily Mail
