FILM SCREENING Cherri (cert 15)

22 — 28 May 2009

Cast: Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates, Rupert Friend

Chéri is a reunion between the great British director Frears, Michelle Pfeiffer and the screenwriter Christopher Hampton 21 years after their collaboration on Dangerous Liaisons.

Based on Colette's 1920 novel, this tells of the love affair between the beautiful retired courtesan Léa (Pfeiffer) and Chéri the son of her old colleague and rival Mme Peloux (Bates). For six years Léa has been educating the callow youth in the ways of love. Mme Peloux has secretly arranged a marriage between her son and a young woman of similar age. As the inevitable moment of parting arrives Léa and Chéri realise how much they mean to each other. The crisp screenplay keeps it lively with a steady flow of dry quips and acerbic one-liners. Pfeiffer's performance is magnetic and subtle, her worldly nonchalance a mask for vulnerability and heartache.Dir: Stephen Frears (2009) Uk 1hr 40mins
