Launch of Classic Sailings new 'No 8'

10 — 11 March 2012

Join Classic Sailing for the launch of their new boat on March 10 and 11.

See the information below from Classic Sailing and join them on Saturday, March 10, for the launch of their new boat.

Classic Sailing's New No 8

The New No 8 is nearing completion at Peter Williams’s boatyard in Fowey.

James and I paid a visit to Peter in Fowey to view the new No 8. Peter has done a fantastic job on using the lines from the old No 8 to create a brand new No 8.

Old No 8, a replica, was purchased for her size and ties to the village of St Mawes, the first one was built in St Mawes at William Peters yard in the early 19th century.

Our 1996 No 8 served excellently as an oared harbour tender. She became an integral part of our back to traditions sailing holidays. However the usage we gave her was more than the construction could handle so we have learnt from it how to make our new No 8 even better for us.

The 2012 No 8 has thicker planking, sturdier top planks and gunnel, the ribs are closer together, the seats have lateral knees as well as vertical, towing points are better positioned. New features include a sculling notch, that’s for rowing with one oar at the stern, mid seat supports, stringers to push your feet against when rowing and a proper brass bilge plug.
The new No 8 is defiantly fit for purpose and we are very very pleased with the high quality of the construction and the beauty of the boat.

Next weekend she will be taken to Gweek and put in a shed alongside Eve of St Mawes were James will complete her painting in good time for her launch
