The Nutcracker

7 — 9 April 2011

This season Duchy Ballet will be presenting The Nutcracker.

Surely the most familiar of classical ballets, it will be even more stunning when it is performed by over 150 of the best young dancers in Cornwall.  It is a seasonal favourite with something for everyone to enjoy.

E.T.A. Hoffman’s story tells of an enchanted Christmas Eve, when young Clara creeps downstairs for one of her presents.  She finds herself at the start of a night of magical adventures as she falls in love with a handsome Prince and battles the Mouse King alongside the toy soldiers that have come to life.

The beautiful setting of the Kingdom of Sweets and its celebratory dances make a fabulous contrast and choreography by Terence Etheridge and Kay Jones tells the story from its mysterious start to its happy conclusion.

Through it all, Tchaikovsky’s music is some of the most instantly memorable of all ballet scores, with a wealth of familiar favourites including the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy which will be performed by Duchy Ballet’s very own Naomi Solomon.
