Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan's (Climates, Uzak) brooding drama Three Monkeys focuses on the emotional fallout when a politician's driver agrees to take the rap for his boss's hit-and-run cowardice. Most of the film concerns what happens to his wife and son while he's in prison and the stifling atmosphere of guilt and deceit arising from a dangerous affair. A masterful composition of spare dialogue, nuanced acting and bleached widescreen cinematography, Ceylan's noirish genre piece won him the best director award at Cannes last year. It is a strangely beautiful, oblique yet powerfully affecting picture of human frailty.

"This is a film of formidable power that sticks in the mind." (Philip French, The Observer)
