Review: Philleigh Way Cookery School

22 November 2016

Last month we had the chance to review the 'Cornwall in a Day' course by cooking enthusiasts Philleigh Way Cookery School, and what a day we had! Five demonstrations, three practical sessions, Prosecco, wine and afternoon tea, it was delicious and fantastic fun! Here's how it happened...

First Impressions...

We loved the Philleigh Way farmhouse, cookery school and garden. It's in the most stunning setting, tucked away only a short distance from the King Harry Ferry. The welcome was especially friendly (which is good if you're a nervous newbie when it comes to cookery as I am!) and the kitchen... wow.

It's the dream country kitchen with an island in the centre! Run by brothers-in-law James Martin and Chef George Pascoe, the Philleigh Way style is inspired by recipes handed down over the generations, delicious local produce and vast experience working in some of the leading kitchens in Cornwall and around the world. I was excited to meet George and get my apron on!

What we made...

We enjoyed learning how to make Hog's pudding, saffron buns, clotted cream and dressed Cornish crab. But most of all, we loved learning how to make a proper Cornish pasty!

What we were drinking...

We started the day with fresh coffee (and delicious homemade sticky Cornish cake made to Granny's recipe!), enjoyed another coffee and homemade cream tea (as made in the demo session by chef George) mid morning, wine with lunch and a cup of local Tregothnan tea in the afternoon, with more cake of course!

Best bits...

  • The location, tucked away in pretty countryside, close to the river
  • The friendly team
  • The fantastic cuisine we can now create
  • The delicious homemade cake and local tea

Need to know tip...

With Christmas only a few weeks away, we think the Philleigh Way cookery courses make the ideal gift for a partner, relative or friend! Enjoy a day learning to cook whilst indulging in some of the finer things, it's a day fantastically spent! And what an original idea for a present! We're planning to do their Christmas Wreath Making and Christmas Cake Decorating courses next!
