Fal River Day Out

22 August 2017

The Fal River boasts some of the county’s most picturesque scenery, beautiful beaches and stunning sub-tropical gardens which, when linked with boat trips and good water-side eateries, provide all the ingredients for a great day out in Cornwall.

With our award-winning network of ferries running to full summer timetable, there really is no time like the present to get on the water and head out on a great day trip. We grabbed a Mussel Card and did just that.

Truro

Our day trip began in Truro, Cornwall's great little city, and the best base for exploring the full stretch of the Fal River.

We hopped on board the Enterprise Boat which sails up to six times a day between Truro and Falmouth, calling at the beautiful Trelissick Garden and old-world fishing village of St Mawes.

Along the way we saw the river in all its glory passing beautiful woodlands & glorious gardens.

As the trip headed down the river, we passed huge ships laid up at Tolverne, and the King Harry Ferry before joining the vast Carrick Roads towards the bustling marine port of Falmouth.

Falmouth

Arriving in Falmouth we took a stroll down the cobbled high street stopping off at many artisanal shops and boutiques.

Enticed by the smell of baked goods we headed into Picnic Cornwall a cool and quirky, independent coffee shop and ordered the perfect morning kick-start - a Latte and Salted Caramel Flapjack.

Refueled and rejuvenated we were ready to continue our adventure.

St Mawes

We boarded the next ferry at Custom House Quay and made the crossing from Falmouth to St Mawes.

The 20 minute journey takes in the world-class scenery of the Carrick Roads which includes two tudor castles and a wealth of marine life in Falmouth Bay.

On arrival in St Mawes we went for a wander around the village, St Mawes has a lot to offer, we explored the quirky streets, before walking around the headland to experience St Mawes Castle up close in all its historic grandeur.

After all that leg work it was time for another treat. St Mawes has developed a reputation as a foodie haven in the past few years. We opted for the Idle Rocks, where we enjoyed a sumptuous lunch in luxuriously comfortable surroundings whilst soaking up the spectacular sea views.

After lunch we sat out on the glorious terrace, just a stone's throw from the water. It was the perfect spot to sit back, unwind and watch the fishermen, kayakers and ferries come and go in the harbour.

Truro

After a very leisurely and relaxed few hours, we set sail back up the Carrick Roads making our return to Truro on a sun soaked upper deck.

On arriving in Truro we made our way to The Alverton, where we had reserved a table in the hotel's stylish gourmet brasserie- renowned for its exquisite cuisine.

Set amongst lush green gardens, The Alverton is a little piece of tranquility in the city. We sat out on the terrace overlooking the grounds, and caught the last of the day's sun before indulging in delicious three course meal. The food was outstading, generous both in portion and flavour.

After dinner we wrapped up our big Fal River day out with a splash of sophistication and style sipping cocktails in the hotel's contemporary bar.
