A Guide to Helford, the dog-friendly haven on Cornwall’s South Coast

25 October 2018

Cornish Horizons takeover this month's Guest Blog and reveal all about the idyllic pet-friendly village of Helford, just south of Falmouth.

Hooray! It’s that time of year again when our furry, four-legged friends are welcome on almost all of Cornwall’s beaches!  From 1st October every year, all the beaches that have a seasonal ban throughout the summer welcome dogs again, so all can enjoy Cornwall’s breath-taking scenery.

Autumn is the perfect time to visit our beautiful county with your pets – the restaurants are quieter, there’s plenty of festivals and events taking place and there is a freshness in the air!  Perfect for clifftop walks and warming up by the fire in the local pub!

One of our favourite pet-friendly spots is the idyllic village of Helford, just south of Falmouth. Nestled on the banks of the Helford River, the village couldn’t be more picturesque; with thatched and white-washed cottages lining the lanes, the winding river with its tranquil inlets, rich countryside and pretty nearby beaches.

There’s plenty of pet-friendly cottages in the village, making it the ideal base for your holiday in South Cornwall.  Why not discover it for yourself and stay in one of our hand-picked cottages in Helford.

The stunning walks round the coast, along the river and through the serene countryside are sure to help you work up an appetite!  But if you need to stretch your legs further, take a trip to one of the many nearby bays and coves.  Helford Passage Beach has some great views, St Anthony-in-Meneage has an ancient church right by the beach and the friendly village of Coverack, further south along the coast, has a beautiful sandy bay.

The Shipwright Arms, Helford’s village pub, is set right on the water front and welcomes families, dogs and also those arriving by boat!  They serve delicious food made with ingredients from the surrounding area.  The local fishermen land their catches on the slipway outside the pub and often provide crab, monkfish and lobster to the pub’s kitchen.  A perfect treat after a day exploring!

There’s plenty to see and do in the surrounding area - Trebah Gardens is an absolute must.  Due to the mild climate enjoyed in southern Cornwall, you’ll find plant species here that won’t survive in other areas of the country, giving Trebah an exotic feel.  This sub-tropical garden is stunning all-year round with hydrangeas prevalent in autumn.  The harbour town of Falmouth is rich in maritime history and provides a great day out.  You can also have a go at a variety of watersports or take a boat trip from here.

There’s so much to see and do, from exploring the majestic Lizard Peninsula to visiting the Seal Sanctuary - recharge your batteries and take a break to this perfect spot before the festive frenzy kicks in!

Cornish Horizons are one of Cornwall's leading accredited agencies with a stunning selection of cottages throughout the county.
