Place Ferry Adventures

8 September 2015

It’s no surprise that each year thousands visit St Anthony Head and walk the South West Coast path from Place, the Roseland Peninsula’s most Southerly tip.

Whether you’re venturing out for a whole day or just a few hours, there is ample walking in and around this area, as well as many hidden coves and beaches.

Take the Place Ferry from St Mawes and begin your adventure…

Wildlife

This area is a haven for wildlife. You can often spot shags and fulmars from the bird hide and be sure to keep your eyes pealed for grey seals, dolphins and basking sharks.

Walking

Place is a gateway to some fantastic walks including the peripheral South West Coast Path, taking you past Porthbeor, Towan, Great Molunan and Little Molunan beaches. Walk right through to Portscatho, a charming coastal village that stands in an Area of Outstanding Natrual Beauty and grab a bite to eat in the pub.

Off the beaten track

Porthbeor beach may not be as accessible as other Cornish beaches, but you will be well rewarded once you arrive, greeted by azure waters, golden sands and tranquillity. The entire coastpath is bordered by small coves and inlets  - embrace your inner explorer and waver off the coastpath to find these hidden spots! You can also access them by kayak - why not rent a kayak from St Mawes?

St Anthony’s Lighthouse

Built in 1834, St Anthony’s lighthouse stands majestically on the tip of the Roseland Peninsula and offers a far-reaching panorama across to Falmouth, St Mawes, the Carrick Roads and the Manacles. Spot wildlife through the bird hide situated just next the lighthouse.

Top tip

Stock up on supplies in St Mawes before crossing over to Place as tea shop stops and refreshments are scarce on this side. Pick up a pasty, deli picnic or pastries from Café Chandlers or St Mawes bakery (located just in front of you when you alight from the ferry in St Mawes.
