Review: Heritage Tours with NMMC

8 August 2019

Here at Fal River, we love any excuse to get out on the water and explore the Cornish coastline, so when we heard about the National Maritime Museum's brand NEW Heritage Tours, we were first in line!

Sometimes less is more, and this is certainly true in the case of the Heritage Tours.  Unlike other boat trips on the Fal, these intimate tours are limited to small groups, with space for eight passengers, one skipper and a crew member.

On arrival at the museum we were greeted by volunteers, who escorted us down to the pontoon where Jonik was moored. Jonik is one of the museum’s most prized Cornish boats, and it’s easy to see why. Built in Fowey in 1934, this stunning 24ft motor launch was donated to the museum by the former owner and has been meticulously restored by the museum's boat team.

The trip, which lasts an hour, was led by Penny, our highly knowledgeable and engaging tour guide. Starting and ending at the museum, we explored the river at a leisurely pace, pausing at various key places to unlock the mysteries of Falmouth's maritime past. We delved deep into the areas fascinating history, from Falmouth's founding in the 17th Century and the Packet Ship Era, to the towns enormous strategic importance during the war and so much more.

The pace of the tour was perfect, just the right amount of information to absorb whilst also allowing plenty of time to sit back and take in the sights of Falmouth from a different perspective.

All in all, the Heritage Tour was a special and memorable experience and one we would highly recommend whether you are local or visiting Falmouth on holiday.

Your ticket includes a day pass to the museum so make sure you give yourself plenty of time before or afterwards to explore the 15 galleries, the Titanic exhibition, the Tidal Zone and the Look Out Tower!

Heritage Tours are available daily until Sunday 15 September, with tours running at 10.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm and 3.30pm. Tickets cost £20 each, or £12 for under 18's.
