TV Treasure Hunter to Talk at Maritime Museum

17 November 2014

Following her most recent TV appearance presenting BBC Two's Swallowed by the Sea: Ancient Egypt's Greatest Lost City, Dr Lucy Blue will be giving a fascinating talk on her experiences as a maritime archaeologist on November 26 at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

The BBC Two documentary Swallowed by the Sea followed a team of maritime archaeologists as they uncovered the remarkable city of Heracleion, lost to the sea and forgotten for over two thousand years.

In her talk at the Maritime Museum, Lucy will be revealing some of the methods she uses to discover lost cities, submerged landscapes and shipwrecks and the clues that maritime archaeologists use to gain an insight into ancient seafaring.

Using case studies from sites in the eastern Mediterranean, Red Sea and Indian Ocean, Lucy will explore a range of methods including coastal survey, underwater excavation, analysis of landscape change, ancient boat technology and navigation and harbour archaeology.

Lucy Blue says: "Maritime archaeology offers a fascinating insight into past maritime worlds. This talk will explore the ancient seascapes within which boats and ships navigated, and through material remains, will offer tangible connections with maritime technologies, communities and goods of trade that crossed the seas of the Indian Ocean and navigated the coasts of Cornwall in the past."

Tickets for the lecture, entitled Ancient Seafaring, at 6.30pm on Wednesday, November 26, are available from the Maritime Museum in Falmouth at £9.50 for lecture only and £19.50 including a two course supper. Doors and bar open from 6pm. To book your seats please call 01326 214546.
