St Mawes Restaurant Shows Love for Local Fishermen
3 February 2015
The Watch House restaurant in St Mawes has decided to give back this Valentine's Day and will be teaming up with Fishermen's mission to offer a special "Give a little love" fixed price menu with £5 going directly to the charity for every meal ordered.
Gina Moore, South West Regional Fundraising Manager for Fishermen's Mission, explains, "the Fishermen's Mission is a charity dedicated to care for those who risk their lives to catch our fish.
During the winter storms of 2013/14 many of our fishermen in Cornwall, and indeed throughout the UK, were unable to work and earn a living for months.
We were able to help and support 650 fishermen and gave over £350,000 in welfare support payments to them and their families. Our aim is, and continues to be, to provide emergency and welfare assistance whenever and wherever it is needed. Helping our fishermen weather the storms of life".
The Watch House owner and Chef, Will Gould, understands what it is like to have your livelihood both dependent and at risk from the sea. It was this time last year that The Watch House was flooded and damaged from the same winter storms that affected the Cornish Fishermen and numerous businesses across Cornwall.
"Last year on Valentine's Day we had a foot of water outside our doors. It has taken almost a year to get everything repaired from last winter's storms so we understand how devastating extreme weather can be and how critical organisations like Fishermen's Mission are."
Will adds, "As a harbour side restaurant we spend the whole year celebrating and enjoying fantastic local seafood. We wanted to make sure that we also thank the hardworking local fishermen and their families that keep this restaurant, Cornwall and the rest of the country in supply of the greatest fish in the sea."
The Watch House's Valentine's menu will offer a range of seasonal dishes and as the event is about giving back to Fisherman and their families, we're also offering some great local seafood specials that show off the best the Cornish coast has to offer. This includes Duchy Oysters shucked to order and River Fal mussels with smoked bacon and Cornish cider, followed by a Seafood 'mixed grill' feast, with grilled half-shell scallops, crispy squid, monkfish and hogs pudding brochette, topped off with beer-battered turbot goujons and chips.
The Valentine's Day menu will be available in the evening on Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th of February. The set price menu is £30 for 3 courses served with complimentary chocolates to finish off the romantic meal. The Watch House will be donating to Fisherman's Mission across both nights and will also have the famous Albert collection box on the bar should anyone wish to make any additional contributions. As an added bonus, The Watch House will also be offering a free glass of bubbly to any fishermen's wives who are treated to a night out at the restaurant.
