The Wrecking Season comes to The Maritime Museum

31 March 2015

In a captivating talk at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth on Monday April 13, artist Jane Darke reveals some of her more unusual findings from beachcombing in North Cornwall, including fishing gear from Canada, Newfoundland and Maine and seeds from South America.

This talk coincides with the Maritime Museum's current Stranded exhibition which includes excerpts from the film The Wrecking Season, a film about beachcombing on the North Coast of Cornwall, written by Nick Darke, and directed by Jane.

The Stranded exhibition features a collection of weavings by Jo Atherton incorporating flotsam found on our beaches which she transforms it into playful, vibrant tapestries.

Jane says: "The North Coast of Cornwall is one of the best collection points in the world for long-haul drift. When a southwest gale blows for three days, artefacts and natural objects being blown from across the world – from Labrador to the Amazon Basin – wash up on these shores."

The talk, entitled The Wrecking Season is part of a programme combining a lecture and lunch, which explores different historical and nautical themes. The lecture and set lunch is from 12.30pm at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, on Monday April 13 and costs £16. To book your place please call 01326 214546.
