National Maritime Museum Cornwall Nominated for British Travel Award

15 July 2015

National Maritime Museum Cornwall has been named by the British Travel Awards (BTAs) as one of the contenders for the UK Heritage Attraction of the Year.

With its recent Viking invasion and partnership loans with the British Museum, National Museum of Denmark and National Museum of Ireland, delivering the exhibition Viking Voyagers, a new Vikings and Dragon play zone soon to be launched for summer and with visitor numbers up on 2014, this is more good news for the Museum team.

Cath Horton, Visitor Services Manager, says: "Our team have worked so hard to grow and develop the Museum and this nomination confirms that years of focus are really paying off.

We are really passionate about what we do, about becoming a must see cultural destination for the county, about stretching Cornwall's visitor season and offering visitors nationally acclaimed opportunities and experiences in a regional museum."

"We are so flattered to be considered alongside giants (literally) in the UK's heritage attraction world, with this year's fierce competition from Giant's Causeway, Stirling Castle, Edinburgh Castle and Snowdon Mountain Railway. We have been fortunate enough to win silver in the last two years thanks to thousands of amazing supporters who took the time to vote for us. This year we would love to go for gold. Could 2015 be a case of third time lucky? We hope so!"

BTA's chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton said: "The British Travel Awards are the largest consumer voted programme in the UK. Last year more than 1.25 million votes were cast to determine the winners and to receive a BTA is a true accolade, with the awards being recognised by the travelling public as the benchmark for excellence. Good luck to National Maritime Museum Cornwall - they must urge all their happy customers to cast their votes by 30th September."

A vote for the Museum, is a vote for Cornwall and with the Eden Project in the UK's Leisure Attraction of the Year category, Bude as Best UK Coastal resort and Cornwall as Best UK Holiday destination, could this be the year they all bring gold home to the county? The winners will be determined by the voice of their visitors, who have until 30 September to cast their vote, with the winners announced at the BTA Gala Awards Dinner, being held in London on 25 November 2015.
