Discover how Europe saw the world at the Maritime Museum
24 September 2015
Over 400 years ago vivid visual and written descriptions of pioneering voyages to the Americas, Africa, India and the Far East reached Europe in the form of finely detailed copperplate engravings.
A fascinating new exhibition at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth will feature the alluring images of Flemish engraver Theodore de Bry.
Between 1590 and 1602 de Bry was amongst the first to illustrate European voyages and travels to newly discovered lands. His engravings are based on original drawings and paintings by artists who travelled on these voyages.
Senior curator, Tehmina Goskar says: "These images represent a curious mixture of fact and fiction, yet they give a fascinating insight into how Europeans understood the world during the earliest years of their colonial expansion."
How Europe Saw the World opens on October 3 at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth. The prints featured in the exhibition have been reproduced courtesy of History Engraved and more engravings can be viewed on the website www.history-engraved.org.
