Wounded Veterans' Boat Build Project Needs your help to Name their Gig!

22 February 2016

A project run by the National Maritime Museum Cornwall which has seen wounded, injured and sick armed forces personnel building a Cornish pilot gig is looking for help from the public in naming their boat.

The Great Big Cornish Gig Project, which is core funded by the Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant scheme, has involved beneficiaries from the Plymouth-based Help for Heroes Recovery Centre and Hasler Company, the Royal Navy's rehabilitation unit, training in boatbuilding skills and building a Cornish pilot gig with the aim of opening up the sport of gig rowing to new participants.

As the build nears completion the team are looking for help in naming the boat and have launched an appeal on their Facebook page for suggestions.

The gig will be officially launched into Falmouth's waters on the 16 March at 4pm and will then be rowed to the Isles of Scilly from Falmouth by a team of veterans, starting on 2 April. Once they reach the Scillies the Help for Heroes Gig Rowing Team will take ownership of the gig and will row it in the World Pilot Gig Championships.

Project Manager Mike Selwood says: "We want a name for our gig that reflects the ethos of the project which, for us civvies running it, has been truly awe inspiring. The name will begin with H4H, but we need suggestions of what that name should be. The person who comes up with the winning name will be invited to the VIP launch event at the Maritime Museum on 16 March. The closing date for entries is 4 March, so get your thinking caps on!"

Anyone wishing to put forward their suggestion for a name should visit www.facebook.com/BigGigProject or email mikeselwood@nmmc.co.uk
