Cnut Display Opens at the Maritime Museum
11 March 2016
To mark the millennium anniversary of King Cnut's conquest of England, a new display at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall invites visitors to dive beneath the waves and meet this Viking king a thousand years after he became King of England.
The new audio-visual installation explores the three faces of the Danish ruler, as represented on a range of Viking era coins on loan from the British Museum, which depict Cnut the king, Cnut the warrior and Cnut the emperor.
The exhibits lead visitors through the Museum and link their unique under-water gallery with the epic Viking Voyagers exhibition, where visitors can climb aboard a full scale replica Viking ship and get up close to rare antiquities on loan from the British Museum, National Museum of Ireland, Manx National Heritage and National Museum of Denmark.
Ian Guyver, Exhibition Design Officer says: "Cnut's empire stretched from the Atlantic seaboard to Byzantium and yet, other than tales of him trying to turn back the tide, our knowledge of this Danish ruler is hazy. This new display will reveal the truth behind the legend."
King Cnut: Holding Back the Tide, which is sponsored by Hayes Parsons, is open now until January 3 2017 at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth.
