Baking for Charity at Philleigh Way Cookery School

10 March 2016

Eat cake and raise money for charity!

Next generation farmhouse cookery school Philleigh Way has today announced it will be holding a series of fundraising courses in aid of breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!, it's chosen charity for the year.

CoppaFeel! is a breast cancer charity dedicated to educating young people about the importance of checking their breasts in order to catch breast cancer early.

Charity founder Kris Hallenga noticed a lump in her breast aged 22 and was initially told by her doctor she was far too young to develop the disease. When she finally obtained a correct diagnosis 8 months later, Kris found out she had stage 4 breast cancer, there is no stage 5. Kris along with her twin sister Maren started CoppaFeel! just one month after Kris was diagnosed and since then, the charity has become a driving force in educating young people via schools, universities and festivals.

Philleigh Way became aware of the charity after hosting twin sister Maren's hen party at the Cookery School. Philleigh Way was so impressed after hearing about the charity's work, especially Kris's determination to make a difference and raise awareness of the disease in young people (which no other breast cancer charity is dedicated to doing), they decided to invite CoppaFeel! to be their chosen charity for 2016. Knowing Kris and Maren had a love of all things cake related; it seemed fitting for Philleigh Way to donate all profits from their cupcake courses to the charity.

During the course students will bake a delicious range of cupcakes as well as producing their own handmade decorations under the guidance of tutor Christine Hawker. Students will be being given the option of making some 'boobie' themed decorations to adorn their cupcakes which will be photographed with the best design being chosen by Kris.

The first cupcake course is taking place on Sunday 20th March with a further course taking place on Wednesday 5th October 2016. The course costs £60.00 and runs from 9.30am – 1.30pm.

Philleigh Way resident chef George Pascoe commented: "After meeting Kris and Maren last year we were so impressed with the work they are doing through CoppaFeel! we wanted support them in some way. Knowing they loved anything to do with cake, it seemed like a great idea to donate the profits from our cupcake courses to the charity. The optional 'boobie' cupcakes bring a fun element to the course whilst also raising awareness of the charities aim, to educate young people to check themselves regularly as breast cancer is not just an 'old persons' disease."

Philleigh Way runs a wide range of day cookery and lifestyle courses throughout the year, starting from £50.00. The focus is always on sharing knowledge and skills handed down through the generations and inspiring people to cook creatively with local, seasonal ingredients.
