Explore the Mystery of The Darlwyne at the Maritime Museum

25 April 2016

On July 31 1966, whilst the nation celebrated World Cup glory, there occurred one of the worst British sea tragedies of modern times.

The pleasure cruiser Darlwyne was lost off the Cornish coast with all 31 men, women and children on board.

A compelling new exhibition opening at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall on April 30, will tell this tragic story through photography, testimony and archive footage.

Despite a massive air and sea search, the boat was never found and the exhibition will also explore the mystery of the Darlwyne's final resting place.

Exhibition Design Officer, Ian Guyver says: "We have produced this exhibition as a memorial to the men, women and children who lost their lives on that tragic day. It is just these sorts of forgotten Cornish stories that we are keen to cover and we also have plans to mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy later in the year."

The Mystery of the Darlwyne is open from April 30 until September 4 at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth.
