Enterprise Boats and Oll and Gwella combine in popular RNLI Fundraiser
29 July 2017
For a second year running, Oll an Gwella (Newquay's acappella (old) boy band) went "up the creek" for charity with Enterprise Boats making a considerable sum for the RNLI as a contribution to the Falmouth International Shanty Festival weekend.
Sailing from Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth, the boat took around 80 passengers around the fleet of vessels which had arrived for Falmouth Classics weekend, before a short stop at St Mawes where the group sang a range of shanties before making their way - musically back to Falmouth.
With a sunny evening on the water the passengers thoroughly enjoyed the mix of Cornish FolkSongs and Shanties as they helped to raise funds for the RNLI, which this year celebrates its 150th Anniversary at Falmouth.
Over the Shanty weekend, the well-known group drawn from Newquay Male Voice Choir made lots of new friends as they entertained from the Main Stage in Events Square on the Saturday evening. "We were delighted that we had the chance, from that main stage, to say a huge "thank you" to Harry Glasson who wrote a number of the Cornish songs that were ringing around Falmouth with the shanties" said Rob Spowart on behalf of the group.
Oll an Gwella went on to enjoy sessions at "The Front" and at "The Games Room" as well as sharing the Sunday morning service at St Charles the Martyr church with "The Molgoggers" from Cork in Ireland.
Rob went on to say "Your Shanty Festival in Falmouth is a fabulous event and a really fun and smiley Festival. We thoroughly enjoyed supporting the weekend and long may it continue.- huge thanks to the hard-working organisers, to the ever generous public and with the help of local commercial operators like Enterprise Boats, it will continue to be a real star event - both in terms of Charity monies raised for a great cause and in terms of enjoyment for the public".
Richard Trewella and Glenn biddle who arranged this year's cruise on behalf of Oll an Gwella confirmed their thanks for both Enterprise Boats and the Shanty Festival organisers for their continued, invaluable support.
They added that a cheque for more than £700 would be presented to the Shanty Festival from Oll an Gwella as the growing popularity of the event and the generosity of those attending contributed to the significant cheque presented to the charity this year.
