An Pobel at Cornwall Museum and Gallery
19 September - 30 November
A photographic project by Heather Rothney documenting the histories, identities and realities of 8 people living in Cornwall
An Pobel — ‘the people’ in Cornish — is a project by photographer Heather Rothney (winner of British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain, Vol. 7) documenting the histories, identities and realities of 8 people who have grown up in Cornwall and live here as permanent residents.
In a climate which tends to paint the county either as an idyllic resort or a provincial backwater, An Pobel aims to allow Cornwall’s nuances to be displayed and discussed by its people, in their own words.
In a series of portraits and interviews, these individuals show us themselves and their experiences — the beautiful, the ugly, and the bits in between.
Previously shown in London in 2024, this exhibition marks a homecoming for the project and an opportunity to return the work to the people who helped create it.
In doing so, Rothney hopes to introduce you to stories which may resonate with your own, Cornish or not, and to give a platform to the lived experiences of those who call this county home.
