Guest Blog : Embrace the Winter Blues

31 January 2022

With so much to do across our shores this season, the Greenbank have put together some top ways to embrace the winter blues in Cornwall in this weeks guests blog!

With the colder weather here to stay and not much to look forward to, for many January can be a tough time. But with our list in hand, we’re sure you’ll soon fall in love with winter in Cornwall and all that it beholds. Discover our guide below.

Go For An Icy Dip

If you’re looking to embrace the blues this winter, an icy dip in our harbour will do just the trick. Head down to The Greenbank gardens, where the Fal River is waiting. At this time of year, we recommend donning a wetsuit but if you’re feeling brave enough, feel free to go in just your swimwear. After making the plunge, why not head to our pub downstairs, The Working Boat, where the crew can whip you up lots of warming brews to help you beat the chill?

Enjoy a Long Coastal Walk

Make the most of Cornwall’s colossal coastline this winter by hitting its paths. The South West Coast Path is widely-known for its beautiful and scenic trails, even in the colder months. With heritage, geology, wildlife and scenery along the way, expect to immerse yourself in a truly awe-inspiring experience. Whether you’re looking for a hiking challenge, or an afternoon stroll followed by a trip to a proper Cornish pub, a walk on our coastline should be high on your to-do list. Discover our must-do walks here.

Transform Your Lunchtime View

Transform your lunchtime view this winter with a trip to the Water’s Edge. Head to our harbourside restaurant for a well-deserved midday indulgence that gives guests a true taste of all that our dinner menu has to offer in a lighter bite. And until the end of February, we’re making your lunch extra delicious by including dessert on us. Savour two courses from our set lunch menu for just £19 and enjoy one of our delectable desserts for free. We can’t think of a better way to embrace our harbour blues this winter. Discover the menu here.

Go Storm Watching

During the winter months, we can’t promise perfect sunshine all the time, but we can assure you there will be some spectacular storms to embrace. Enjoy one of our favourite winter weather-based activities of storm watching with a front-row seat from our harbourside lounge. A cocktail or two as well won’t go amiss while gazing at the rain and wind rolling over the harbour.

Hit Up The Surf

While the warmth of summer might feel like a distant memory, Cornwall’s turquoise waters and sandy beaches stick around all year long. And lucky for us, the surf is much better too. It’s a local secret that the surf is far superior in the winter months, as you’ll find bigger swells and better waves. Discover our top winter surf spots here.

Discover Your New Favourite Coffee Shop

With the cooler weather firmly in place, now is the perfect time to hunker down with a good book and warming coffee. And what better way to do this than through exploring Cornwall’s amazing coffee scene? Falmouth alone is filled to the brim with delicious coffee shops that stock some amazing local brands. Our pub downstairs, The Working Boat, have put together a blog all about their top coffee shops in Falmouth. Discover it here.

Embrace Cornwall's Quieter Season

If there is ever a time to visit Cornwall’s most popular spots, here it is. In the winter season, you can expect to avoid the crowds and the rush of the summer months at the typically tourist-heavy attractions. Expect to enjoy your favourite Cornish places, like St Ives or the Eden Project, with empty beaches and no crowds in sight.  If that doesn’t cinch it for you though, the quieter season also means you’ll always be first in line for ice cream.
