Guest Blog: Via Ferrata
10 October 2022
Nestled away in a beautiful 60 acre site near Penryn is Via Ferrata Cornwall, an outdoor activity centre offering one-of-a-kind activities, all designed to boost confidence and wellbeing. The most popular of these is South England’s one and only full Via Ferrata course! Built into our historic granite quarries, this epic high wire adventure sees you wind across cliff faces on our iron stairway, brave the high wire bridge, tackle high challenges and leap from the cliff top onto the zip wire – all whilst taking in stunning views over the Lizard Peninsular and Falmouth Bay! Here are just some of the benefits of Via Ferrata…
Boosted wellbeing
The NHS has listed 5 tips for boosting mental wellbeing: being physically active, connecting with others, learning new skills, paying attention to the present moment (mindfulness) and giving to others. Our award-winning Via Ferrata definitely ticks all these boxes!
Exercise that beats the gym
Scaling quarry walls up to 20m high, walking across (and even dangling from!) high wires, and flinging yourself down our zip wire certainly burns some calories, and because you’re clipped into a safety cable at all times, you can push your limits knowing you’re in a completely safe environment.
A great way to connect
Next comes the chance to really connect with others and make amazing memories with loved ones as you embark on this unique adventure together! Whether you’re coming on a family day out or a team away day to treat your staff, there’s nothing quite like Via Ferrata for a chance to encourage and cheer each other on…
“Great fun, the instructor was very helpful and knowledgeable. Would recommend if you are in the area. The views from the zip wire are brilliant! A really good activity to do as a family together.” – Stuart, Trip Advisor
“I really enjoyed the whole experience. We were on a family holiday and it brought the whole of us together as a team.” – Pippa, Trip Advisor
Learning something new
This is an incredibly fun way to develop your climbing skills and you can make the experience as challenging as you like. If you’re new to climbing and Via Ferrata, you can use the metal rungs which are drilled into the rock face to navigate your way around the route. Or, if you’re a climbing pro and after an extra challenge, you can forgo these and use the natural rock crevices and foot and hand holds.
Practicing mindfulness
It goes without saying, but you can’t really think about much else whilst you’re taking on a rock face or flying through the air on a zip wire, making this the perfect way to leave behind the normal strains of daily life and focus your full attention on having fun!
Giving to others
All profits from Via Ferrata Cornwall go to our launching charity BF Adventure to provide critical support to local disadvantaged children and young people. These people are facing life’s toughest challenges, including mental health problems, trauma, poverty, physical disabilities and behavioural challenges – but the charity continues to empower them to build resilience and break down emotional, social and physical barriers in order to unlock their potential. By choosing to do an activity with us, you’re making an incredible difference to these people’s lives!
Challenges for everyone
Suitable for adventuresome children aged 8+ to full on andrenaline junkies, there are challenges for everyone and definitely ample opportunities to conquer some fears, whether that’s by dangling from the bridge, leaning back hands-free or trying some big moves!
“Great fun, we had a day out of the office. Tony was really good, enough challenges for all. Stunning views, loads of time to soak up the atmosphere in and around the quarry.” – Gary, Trip Advisor
Great for confidence
Via Ferrata shows us that often, we can do more than we think. Conquering fears of heights and navigating the high challenges on the rock face gives a real buzz, and somehow afterwards we’re not quite as fazed by the other challenges that life throws at us. Research also shows the importance of learning new skills in boosting confidence and self-esteem, as well as connecting with others. Practicing your climbing and balancing skills on our Via Ferrata and feeling the adrenaline rush that comes with that is one epic confidence booster!
A great sense of achievement
We hear time and time again of the great sense of achievement Via Ferrata brings to our participants, whatever their climbing abilities! Once you’ve completed the Full Classic course, you’ll end with the zip wire finale and get to soar past the route you just completed as your reward. The Cornish Barista’s Café, which has amazing views overlooking parts of the course is also a great place to relax afterwards – the cake and lunches will not disappoint!
An adrenaline rush…and so much more!
“Go. Just go. There's no question about it. You maybe within a few miles of the sand and the sea, however spending a few hours at this place will be far more beneficial to you and your family than sitting like a yoyo on a beach. What this place does is bring you back to face your fears in a hugely well controlled and very safe environment. When was the last time you did that? It doesn't matter if you are 8 or 80, everyone needs a regular adrenaline shake up; this place provides it in spades, and is run by some exceptionally professional guys. Plus there is a fantastic cafe too. My advice is to book, if there is space ;-)” – Tim, Trip Advisor
Back to nature
Several studies have linked the benefits of the outdoors to improved health and well-being. It’s believed that contact with nature plays a crucial and irreplaceable role in brain development, and simply walking through a natural environment can reduce blood pressure as cortisol levels return to normal and stress levels are reduced.
Our remote site away from the crowds is home to woodlands, heathland and a diverse range of wildlife. The Via Ferrata is built into water-filled quarries and you can sometimes spot fish below whilst up on the high wire bridge. We’ve also created some nature trails with The Wildlife Trust, so these can be great to wander through too!
We hope you enjoyed reading about Via Ferrata and we wish you the happiest of adventures!
