Guest Blog: Miracle Theatre
8 December 2022
Welcome in the festive season with the return of Miracle Theatre’s much-loved Christmas Show at not one, but two venues! Round up family, friends and neighbours and ready yourselves for a re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty. Opening on the 8th of December with matinees and evening performances until New Year’s Eve!
How well do you know the tale of Sleeping Beauty?
Whilst many are familiar with the story as told by Disney, there are also versions from all over the world including, of course, the famous Brothers Grimm. Each re-telling of the tale is unique, making it perfect for some offbeat Miracle treatment! You can certainly expect a wicked curse and a sleeping princess, but who knows what magic might unfold?!
The Miracle team have sent over some behind-the-scenes photos from this week’s rehearsals.
Read on below!
Sleeping Beauty fights back! Katy Owen (who plays Sleeping Beauty or, is known in folklore as, Briar Rose) gives Ben Dyson (Maurice the Goblin) a solid jab on the chin: princess who knows how to stand up for herself. In Miracle’s version of the classic tale, Sleeping Beauty is an imaginative and resourceful heroine not to be messed with.
A person of many talents, Holly Cassidy is the show’s musical director and also plays the parts of Queen Ethel and Little Christine. Being an actor while also having a behind the scenes role can be a challenging dynamic, but brings with it the gift of understanding the relationship between on and off the stage firsthand.
And here at the director’s table, the offstage creative team can be seen giggling at the rehearsal taking place behind the camera. Tom Adams (left) is the Sleeping Beauty composer & lyricist and visited for song practice. Next to him are the show’s two co-directors Hannah Stephens (centre) and Bill Scott (right). Together they make a fantastic trio, working collaboratively to bring you smart, hilarious and memorable Christmas theatre.
It’s almost showtime! Four of the five actors in Sleeping Beauty march across the rehearsal space at Miracle HQ in Redruth. Ben Kernow, Ben Dyson, Charlotte Bister and Katy Owen are strutting their stuff for the teaser videoclip - featuring songs, dance & mischief - to be released soon.
And what to expect from the show when it reaches the public stage? You’ll be transported to the stage of the Cornwall Riviera Holiday Camp in 1959 where the legendary Yellowjackets are bursting to entertain the campers with their hilarious version of this classic story.
Follow the adventures of the resourceful princess and the goblin, the fairy, and the piskie hiding in her attic. As she nears her 18 th birthday, how will she avoid the spiteful spell set to put her to sleep for 100 years?!
