The Waterside Gallery Showcase Event is taking place on Thursday 30th July, 18:00 – 20:30, right on the water's edge in St Mawes.

This whimsical evening brings together art, atmosphere and a glass of something sparkling, as Waterside Gallery celebrates new partnerships with two artists whose work captures Cornwall at its most evocative: Sophie Velzian and Hayden Price.

The showcase will focus on the pair's exclusive new plein air paintings, created outdoors, on site, in direct response to the landscape around them,  along with a rare look at the process behind them.

Sophie's pieces are richly layered and textured, often incorporating materials gathered from the very locations she paints. Each piece is paired with written prose that captures the story behind it, all drawn together in her sketchbooks,  a beautiful blend of visual and written storytelling.

Hayden's work turns its attention to the Cornish landscape through the seasons, exploring how light, atmosphere and colour shift throughout the year. As he puts it, the challenge is capturing "an accurate depiction of the view by recording the atmosphere, light, colour and depth" - no easy feat, but one that shows in every brushstroke.

For those planning their evening, getting to St Mawes couldn't be easier. The St Mawes Ferry runs a late service every Thursday throughout summer, with the last sailing back to Falmouth departing at 21:45 so plenty of time to enjoy the exhibition, a glass of fizz, and the gallery's waterside setting without watching the clock.
