Martin Jones: The Piano and its Showpieces
11 April 2023
Friday 21st April at 7.30pm, Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall, Portscatho
The piano as an instrument for virtuoistic fireworks was put on the map by the c.19th glamorous composer and performer extraordinaire Franz Liszt – perhaps the first of ever global musical superstar.
He set the pattern for modern style, cultural leaders like Beyonce, Adele, by way of Liberace, Duke Ellington and Earl Wild and most concert pianists.
Martin Jones – has made the more dazzling and sometimes recondite parts of the piano repertoire his performing life’s work ever since his New York Carnegie Hall and London Queen Elizabeth Hall debut in 1968, 55 years ago!
His recordings of the complete Percy Grainger piano music won many prizes and his inclusion of clever arrangements (as well as piano classics) in his programme should make for an entertaining evening.
Martin Jones continues to champion music which tests the very boundaries of what can be written and performed with style for piano.
