The Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth is delighted to announce the promotion of long-serving team member, Matt Garland, to the position of General Manager.
Matt first joined The Greenbank in November 2006 as a part-time waiter. Over the past 19 years, he has built his career within the hotel, progressing through a variety of roles including Training Junior Manager, Restaurant Manager, Food and Beverage Manager, Assistant Hotel Manager, and Hotel Manager. His extensive experience and deep understanding of the business have made him an invaluable member of the team.
Managing Director, Ben Young commented: “Matt’s success is extremely well deserved, and it pays testament to what can be achieved in our unique industry, a direct-from-school waiter who has risen and grown into a fully-fledged General Manager. 12 years ago, I was given the same role at The Greenbank, so I know what it takes and how much this means. Well done, Matt!”
Now leading a workforce of around 130 staff, Matt continues to be at the heart of daily operations, from supporting department managers to maintaining the high standards of hospitality that The Greenbank is known for. Having grown up in Falmouth, he takes great pride in welcoming both locals and visitors, ensuring each guest receives the warm and genuine service the hotel is celebrated for.

“The Greenbank really does feel like my second family,” Matt reflects. “Having started here nearly 20 years ago, I’m incredibly proud to now be General Manager and to lead such a fantastic team in the place I grew up. I know many of our guests personally, and being able to offer them memorable experiences on our beautiful harbourside is genuinely rewarding. With the team’s dedication and the strong community spirit that surrounds The Greenbank, I’m excited to continue building on our reputation as both a much-loved local landmark and a welcoming destination for visitors.”
As the oldest hotel in Falmouth, The Greenbank has been part of the town’s history since 1640, offering unrivalled harbourside views and a rich maritime heritage. Beyond its reputation for hospitality, the hotel plays an active role in the community through partnerships with local charities and fundraising initiatives, from supporting the RNLI to championing Cornish food producers and cultural events. Under Matt’s leadership, The Greenbank will continue to strengthen its place at the heart of the community while delivering exceptional experiences for every guest.
