The Cornwall Hotel Collection announces the acquisition of The Atlantic Hotel in Newquay

27 March

The Cornish-owned hospitality group expands its portfolio with landmark Newquay hotel, pledging future restoration and community-focused stewardship.

The Cornwall Hotel Collection is proud to announce the acquisition of the iconic Atlantic Hotel in Newquay, marking a significant milestone in the continued growth of the locally owned hospitality group.

The Newquay landmark now joins sister properties The Falmouth and The Greenbank in Falmouth, and The Alverton in Truro, further strengthening the collection’s presence across Cornwall. As with each hotel in the portfolio, the acquisition reinforces the group’s long-term commitment to safeguarding historic Cornish hotels while ensuring they remain deeply rooted in their communities.

Overlooking the dramatic cliffs and vast Atlantic horizon, The Atlantic Hotel has been an enduring feature of Newquay’s landscape since it first opened in 1892. Built during the height of the Victorian railway boom, when seaside tourism flourished, the hotel quickly became one of Cornwall’s most prestigious coastal retreats. Its commanding position above Towan Beach, sweeping sea views, and distinctive Victorian architecture have made it a beloved landmark for generations of visitors and locals alike.

Newquay itself – famed for its golden beaches, thriving surf culture and vibrant community– has long been one of Cornwall’s most dynamic coastal towns. The Atlantic’s setting captures the very essence of the north coast: expansive skies, rolling waves, and a deep connection to the sea.

The acquisition follows the successful and sensitive refurbishment currently underway at The Falmouth, where The Cornwall Hotel Collection has been carefully restoring the Victorian seafront hotel to reflect its heritage while enhancing comfort and functionality for modern guests.

Future plans for The Atlantic will centre on a phased and thoughtful restoration programme, protecting the building’s historic character while elevating guest experience and ensuring the hotel thrives for decades to come.

The Cornwall Hotel Collection remains proudly independent and locally owned, with deep roots in the county. The addition of The Atlantic represents not just expansion, but a continuation of the group’s mission: to champion Cornwall’s historic hotels, support local employment, and work closely with the communities that surround them.

A word from Ben Young, Managing Director of The Cornwall Hotel Collection\

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome The Atlantic Hotel into The Cornwall Hotel Collection family. Newquay is a place of extraordinary natural beauty — the light, the coastline, the energy of the town — and The Atlantic sits at the very heart of it all.

As Cornish hoteliers, we feel a deep responsibility to care for the county’s historic landmarks. These hotels are part of Cornwall’s story. Our aim is always to honour their heritage while securing their future.

The progress we’re seeing at The Falmouth demonstrates what can be achieved with patience, respect and long-term vision, and we’re excited to bring that same careful restoration to The Atlantic. Just as importantly, we are committed to keeping the hotel’s feet firmly planted in local interests — working with local suppliers, supporting local jobs, and ensuring the hotel continues to be a place the community feels proud of.

This is not just about growth; it’s about stewardship. We’re looking forward to becoming part of Newquay’s community and to beginning this next chapter for such an iconic hotel.”

The Atlantic Hotel will continue to operate as normal during this transition. Guests can expect the same warm welcome, with enhancements introduced gradually and sympathetically.

Now with four distinctive hotels spanning Cornwall’s south and north coasts, The Cornwall Hotel Collection continues to build a portfolio defined not by scale alone, but by character, heritage and a genuine sense of place.
