Old Town Hall Gallery
The Old Town Hall is a most intriguing gallery/museum of art containing an eclectic collection of art and antiquities from ancient to modern periods from around the world.
Recent acquisitions include :- an Opie portrait, a 17th-18th century Cusco archangel painting, a pre- Minoan neolithic water pot, and 16th and 17th century European wood carvings, Han dynasty terracotta grave goods, Indus Valley figurines, and a Scandinavian hobby horse.
You can also find a circa 1200 corbel head carving of King John, a circa 1500 Italian dowry chest, early English furniture, a Cambodian pre-Khmer stone carving, many African masks and carvings and various 18th, 19th, 20th-century and contemporary paintings and much more.
We are in the process of improving the collection, so many surplus items are for sale. Works of different periods and cultures are mixed in a somewhat haphazard way to draw attention to diversity in art. If we do have an ethos, it is to promote graphically, interest in art and relevance of art through its narrative content.
Publications and Studio
As the home of Whirligig Studio, we publish our own wide selection of reasonably priced cards, prints and booklets of our paintings, the proceeds of which go towards the restoration and maintenance of the building. We are continually adding to the list of titles. Incidentally, the extraordinary books of Cornish author and artist Andrew Lanyon are on sale here at cost price.
Old Town Hall History
An illustrated history of the Old Town Hall by Mike Jenks is on sale here at cost price.
