With its excellent light and beautiful scenic inspiration, Cornwall is well known for its sizeable artistic community. This month, we look at some of our area's great galleries and museums for cultural inspiration.

Falmouth Art Gallery

Based on The Moor, this publicly funded art gallery has an outstanding collection of over 2,000 artworks, from Pre-Rapjaelite and British Impressionist paintings to contemporary prints, photography and a children's illustration archive.

The current exhibition, 'Unfamiliar Territory', explores how Cornwall's iconic landscapes have evolved over the years and how artists have responded to them.

Gwithti an Pystri - A Cabinet of Folklore and Magic

This quirky museum of folklore, art and magic is situated on Falmouth High Street in a beautiful old 19th Century two-storey building, complete with its own ghost! It houses an eclectic display of genuine artefacts and curiosities, telling an untold tale of Cornish folklore, art and magic.

Membership for the museum gives year-long admission as well as access to the extensive onsite library, and the museum also houses a shop.

National Maritime Museum Cornwall

An independent museum located on Discovery Quay in Falmouth, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall celebrates the incredible maritime history of Cornwall.

It houses 15 galleries over five floors of interactive exhibits, with Pirates being their new, major exhibition. This exciting exhibition explores how popular culture has shaped how we think of pirates today whilst diving beneath the surface to unearth the harsh and terrifying truth.

The Waterside Gallery, St Mawes

The Waterside Gallery, an independent Cornish gallery in the heart of St Mawes, champions emerging and established artists and is very evocative of its location.

Silver jewellery by Frances Wood, floral studies by Julie Moss, and coastal pieces by Steve Sherris are just some of the collections to be found on Marine Parade.

Lemon Street Gallery, Truro

Ideally placed to draw on Cornwall's rich modernist tradition, Lemon Street Gallery is situated in an elegant building housing gallery space on 3 floors.

There is a yearly calendar of publications and solo and group exhibitions. They also promote artists through touring exhibitions at major art institutions nationally and internationally. The Spring exhibition runs until 3rd June.

Veryan Galleries, The Roseland

Situated on the beautiful Roseland peninsula between two of the landmark Round Houses in Veryan Green, about a mile from Carne Beach, the gallery is in its 42nd year of selling quality original works by well-known Cornish artists.

Working with a small group of dedicated professional artists, each of whom are well established in their field the work ranges from exacting realism to the wild and wonderful, plus unique ceramics, jewellery and prints.

Royal Cornwall Museum

Founded in 1818 by The Royal Institution of Cornwall to promote excellence in science and art, the county's artistic heritage is reflected in the museum's art collection. 

This local charity can be found on River Street in Truro and is a space at the heart of Cornwall where ideas can be discussed and challenged, a place for sharing knowledge, learning, creativity, and ambition.

Current exhibition 'This Land' tells the story of artist Natalie Day's journey of returning to Cornwall, reconnecting and coming full circle. Workshops and events alongside this exhibition will bring the community together to discuss and create, echoing the ancient gatherings on Cornwall's sacred landscapes.

Cornwall Crafts Association at Trelissick Gallery

For fifty years the Cornwall Crafts Association has supported the craftmakers resident in Cornwall to encourage the highest standards of design and making. This year to mark the occasion of the 50th Gold Anniversary exhibition, members were invited to produce a piece of work or collection to commemortate and celebrating the best contemporary craft.
